Cities use speed-sensor traffic lights to reward compliant drivers and cut crashes
Albuquerque and Portland have installed speed-sensor-linked “rest-in-red” signals that give quicker green lights to drivers who stay at the speed limit, resulting in fewer accidents.
After years of ineffective punitive measures, Albuquerque introduced a “rest-in-red” traffic-signal system on Lead and Coal avenues that remains red until a car is detected, yet uses speed sensors to turn green sooner for vehicles traveling at or below the speed limit, prompting a sharp drop in high-speed crashes and injuries. Resident Isaac Romero notes a marked reduction in nighttime racing incidents. Portland adopted the concept on Southeast Powell Boulevard, calling it a “virtual speed bump”; the first test intersection saw average speeds fall from 39 mph to the 30 mph limit.
Oregon State University researchers assisted in selecting the detection technology, while a North Carolina Department of Transportation study reported a 43 % crash reduction with similar systems. Critics such as Jay Beeber of the National Motorists Association doubt driver adaptation without broader education, and many municipalities remain cautious about wider implementation.
