Citizens rally in Prague demanding Prime Minister Babiš protect historic Výtoň rail bridge
Around a hundred demonstrators gathered in Prague to call on Prime Minister Andrej Babiš to back the preservation and repair of the 125-year-old Výtoň railway bridge.
The protest, held on Sunday, marked the 125th anniversary of the bridge’s opening and highlighted its deteriorating condition, which now limits rail traffic. Experts argue that the riveted steel structure is a valuable piece of the city’s industrial heritage. In 2022, the Railway Administration chose a plan to replace the protected steelwork with a new one on the existing pillars, a proposal that faced pushback from local authorities and heritage groups, prompting a review.
Why it matters
The bridge’s fate reflects broader tensions between heritage preservation and infrastructure modernization in Czech policy.
