Citroën unveils electric 2CV concept, aiming for sub-£13,000 price in 2028

Citroën announced it will revive the iconic 2CV as an electric vehicle, targeting a launch in 2028 with a starting price below €15,000 (under £13,000).

Citroën confirmed that the legendary 2CV will return as an electric vehicle, with production slated for 2028 and a price tag set below €15,000, which translates to under £13,000 in Britain. The concept, displayed on the eve of the Paris Motor Show, retains hallmark design cues such as rounded LED headlamps, a fabric roof and even a dedicated egg-carrier, echoing the original’s farmer-friendly origins. At 3.76 m long and weighing less than a tonne, the EV aims for a practical 150-mile range and eligibility for Europe’s proposed M1E class incentives.

The model will share its underpinnings with a Fiat counterpart to meet the low-cost target, and it will be classified as a full-size car rather than a light quadricycle. Xavier Chardon emphasized that the revival focuses on the 2CV’s historic values of simplicity, affordability and freedom, not merely nostalgia. The move follows Renault’s success with retro-styled EVs and reflects Citroën’s strategy to leverage its heritage amid rising competition from Chinese manufacturers.

Why it matters

The new electric 2CV could make affordable EV ownership possible for a broad market, reviving a classic design for modern mobility.
