Clash between Tikhir and Yimkhiung tribes kills one, injures another in Kiphire

A dispute between the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities in Kiphire district turned violent, leaving one person dead, another wounded and dozens of homes destroyed.

A communal clash between the Tikhir and Yimkhiung tribes in Kiphire district, Nagaland, escalated into violence on Saturday, killing one person and injuring another. The unrest also saw over a dozen houses torched in various villages where the two groups live side by side. In response, district officials invoked prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and sent extra security personnel to vulnerable locations, keeping the area tense through Sunday evening.

Deputy chief minister Yanthungo Patton, who also handles the Home portfolio, said the state government is closely tracking the incident and appealed for calm and dialogue. The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation expressed shock, urging the Yimkhiung Tribal Council and the Tikhir Tribal Council to take responsibility and work toward restoring normalcy.

Why it matters

The violence threatens communal harmony in Nagaland and could destabilize the region if not contained.
