Clashes and arrests erupt near Brussels Midi station amid police presence

Youth groups and police engaged in confrontations near Brussels Midi station, with arrests and vehicle damage reported.

In the vicinity of Brussels' Midi railway station, groups of young people and police engaged in a series of confrontations, during which officers deployed tear-gas. The unrest led to damage of several vehicles and the ignition of a car near the station. Authorities closed the Clemenceau metro station and suspended or rerouted several bus lines in the city centre and around Midi.

These disturbances coincided with a CGSP-organized public-sector strike and a newly circulated call for a youth gathering at the Central station, which police monitored from early morning with checks and searches of participants. While the rest of the Brussels-Capital region remained calm, the police presence was heightened in the affected areas.

Why it matters

The unrest highlights tensions between youth groups and law enforcement during a broader public-sector strike in Brussels.
