Class action alleges Oura misled buyers about sleep-tracking precision
A proposed class action filed in San Francisco claims Oura’s smart rings cannot accurately measure sleep stages and rely on AI guesses.
A new class-action lawsuit filed Thursday in San Francisco accuses Oura of deceiving consumers about the capability of its wearable rings to track sleep. The complaint, prepared by Clarkson Law Firm, argues that the devices cannot detect the physiological signals required to determine sleep quality or stages, relying instead on AI-generated estimates that the filing describes as having "a coin flip’s chance of being correct."
It points to Oura’s advertising that claimed the rings could see what only a clinical sleep lab can, citing figures such as 79% overall accuracy and a later claim of 95% sleep-staging accuracy. The plaintiffs contend that sleep occurs in the brain, not on a finger, making the advertised performance impossible. The filing asks the court to halt the misleading marketing and to provide restitution to affected customers. Oura has not responded to requests for comment.
