Classic Hits Radio pulls Ed Sheeran songs amid fallout from Macklemore tour controversy

Classic Hits Radio, an Irish-owned station under Bay Broadcasting Limited, will no longer include Ed Sheeran’s music in its playlist for the foreseeable future, citing strong listener reaction to the recent tour dispute. The conflict began when American rapper Macklemore was removed as a support act on Sheeran’s US Loop tour after performing a protest song and displaying footage supporting Palestinians, prompting several Irish opening acts, including Aaron Rowe and the group Beoga, to withdraw.

Sheeran clarified that the decision to drop Macklemore was made by promoters, not himself, and pledged to continue the tour. In response, stadium owner Robert Kraft, who barred Macklemore from his venues, announced a $2 million donation to aid the region, while Macklemore pledged $1 million to Palestinian organizations and challenged Kraft to match it. Classic Hits Radio’s programme director Dave Kelly said the station’s choice reflects its duty to listen to its audience and stand with Irish artists who have taken a stand.
