Clayton Glass enters administration, 290 jobs lost as three plants shut
Clayton Glass has been placed in administration, leading to the closure of sites in County Durham, North Lanarkshire and Blackburn and the redundancy of 290 workers.
Founded in 1956, Clayton Glass employed 573 staff across seven UK sites before entering administration earlier this month. Interpath’s James Lumb and Howard Smith were appointed administrators on September 18 and later arranged a sale of parts of the business to a consortium headed by former managers, preserving 283 jobs at sites in Nottingham, Swindon, Canterbury and Dewsbury. The remaining facilities in County Durham, North Lanarkshire and Blackburn will be shut, resulting in 290 redundancies.
The administrators said high energy and raw-material prices combined with prolonged low demand eroded margins, making the business unsustainable. Lumb emphasized the company’s historic role in the British glass sector and noted that similar pressures affect many housing-market suppliers. A dedicated team is assisting affected staff with redundancy claims.
