Cleaner Air and Renewable Projects May Be Unintentionally Boosting Global Warming

A new study links Europe's rapid summer warming to the removal of sulfate pollution rather than CO₂, and similar cooling effects are vanishing from ships and renewable energy installations, unintentionally adding heat.

Scientists from Spain’s Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the UK Met Office published findings in Geophysical Research Letters showing that European summer temperatures have risen nearly double the rate of the extratropical Northern Hemisphere since the 1980s. The acceleration is traced not to rising carbon dioxide but to the removal of sulfate particles from power-plant emissions, which had previously reflected sunlight and cooled clouds.

Comparable cooling losses occurred after international rules cut sulfur in marine fuel, erasing reflective ship tracks—a change James Hansen calls an accidental geoengineering experiment. The article also notes that large solar farms generate heat islands, wind turbines can modestly warm surface air, and offshore wind farms disturb marine ecosystems, all adding unintended warming. While climate models capture the general pattern, they underestimate its magnitude, prompting the authors to argue for prioritizing adaptation over further clean-energy projects that may exacerbate warming. They conclude that policies meant to cool the planet are paradoxically heating it.
