Cloudflare buys Deno to strengthen its serverless Workers platform

Cloudflare announced it has acquired Deno, the company behind the Deno runtime, to enhance its Workers programming model.

Cloudflare revealed on Friday that it is purchasing Deno, the startup responsible for the Deno JavaScript/TypeScript runtime. The deal is intended to boost Cloudflare's Workers offering, a serverless environment that runs code across the company's global network. Kenton Varda, who leads the Workers engineering effort, explained that integrating Deno will refine the programming model while maintaining an open-source approach.

Deno, founded by Bert Belder and Node.js originator Ryan Dahl, had just launched celld, an open-source version of Workers that Varda praised. Dahl noted that joining Cloudflare will help make the Workers model a mainstream way to build servers. The purchase price was not disclosed; Deno's prior funding totals $26 million, with a Series A led by Sequoia.

Why it matters

The deal could accelerate open-source serverless development and expand Cloudflare's edge computing capabilities.
