CMS identifies $1.5 billion in savings by removing duplicate Obamacare-Medicaid enrollments

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said the agency has cut about 190,000 overlapping enrollments, saving an estimated $1.5 billion annually.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, announced that the Task Force to Eliminate Fraud has identified around 70,000 deceased persons still listed in Obamacare subsidies and about 120,000 living individuals enrolled in both Obamacare and state Medicaid. The duplicate enrollments were removed, with affected patients given a 30-day window to select a single plan; non-responders were retained in Medicaid to avoid loss of coverage.

Oz cited past data-matching pauses during the COVID-19 pandemic as a factor that allowed the overlap to grow. He noted that eliminating similar duplications last year saved roughly $4.4 billion, and one outlet effort is projected to save $1.5 billion each year. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson stressed that the cleanup targets wasteful payments to insurers and brokers, not patients.

Why it matters

Removing duplicate health enrollments saves billions of taxpayer dollars while ensuring vulnerable patients keep essential coverage.

How the sides frame it

Center coverage focuses on a lawsuit alleging illegal star-rating calculations, while right-leaning coverage highlights a fraud-prevention effort that saves $1.5 billion annually.

CENTER

Centrist coverage frames the story as a legal dispute over CMS’s star-rating methodology and alleged regulatory overreach.

RIGHT

Right-leaning coverage frames the story as a successful anti-fraud crackdown that eliminates duplicate enrollments and saves taxpayers billions.

The right emphasises

  • CMS identified 189,000 dead or duplicate enrollees and removed them.
  • The effort is projected to save $1.5 billion each year and prevent $738 million in improper subsidies this year.
  • Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. highlighted the fraud-crackdown as a taxpayer-saving measure.
