CNAIR to halt drivers on highways for origin-destination traffic surveys in 2026
The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration will stop vehicles on Romanian highways and ask drivers about their routes, cargo and travel purpose as part of a 2026 traffic study.
CNAIR announced that, through its Technical Studies Centre, it will conduct Origin-Destination traffic surveys across Romania’s highway network in 2026. Police will intercept vehicles between 08:00-12:00 and 14:00-18:00 on specific dates in September and October, directing them to a side lane or parking area for questioning. Drivers will be asked standardized questions about where they started, where they are headed, the purpose of the trip and the type of freight being carried.
The agency stresses that no licence-plate or personal data will be collected, in line with GDPR requirements. The data will be used to identify heavily used routes, refresh transport databases and improve national road planning. CNAIR urged motorists to cooperate to keep delays short and traffic flow smooth.
