Coalition talks threaten to alienate red-green voters over policy compromises

Preliminary election figures suggest that Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson will begin talks to form a red-green coalition with the Green Party, Centre Party and Left Party. The talks are likely to be contentious, particularly regarding cabinet composition, as the Left Party seeks ministerial seats while Centre refuses to join a government that includes the Left. Policy divergences add further strain: the Greens, Left and the Social Democrats favor phasing out nuclear power and revising sick-pay deductions, positions rejected by Centre voters.

Refugee policy and welfare reforms also split the bloc, with Centre supporters largely against reduced refugee intake and profit bans in public services. Political scientist Henrik Ekengren Oscarsson warns that Andersson will need both skill and humility to balance these competing demands and avoid a backlash among the coalition’s diverse electorate.
