Coalition unveils curriculum overhaul emphasizing flag pride and Western values

The Coalition disclosed a comprehensive curriculum reform that would excise units on Indigenous history, sustainability and Australia’s ties with Asia, replacing them with a focus on the Australian flag and Western cultural foundations. Julian Leeser argued that discipline and a pipeline of former Australian Defence Force personnel into teaching would improve classroom behaviour and academic outcomes, especially for boys.

The plan also proposes one-year teacher accreditation, stricter behavioural expectations, and limits on AI and screen use in schools. While Leeser said Indigenous content should remain, it would be taught only within a framework that also highlights Britain’s legacy and multiculturalism. The policy comes amid record-low PISA scores and stagnant NAPLAN results, and follows recent moves by Angus Taylor to criminalise flag burning and protect Australia Day’s date.
