Coast Guard rescues 16 migrants after capsized boat off Baja California, search ongoing

Around 1 a.m. Friday, a vessel off the Pacific coast near Ensenada, Mexico, transmitted a mayday call that led U.S. Coast Guard air and surface units to respond. The boat, believed to be involved in human smuggling, capsized, throwing dozens into the water; a survivor said the crew may have numbered 27. Coast Guard personnel rescued 16 individuals, who were flown by helicopter to San Diego and taken to hospitals, with two remaining in critical condition.

A fixed‑wing aircraft from Sacramento also took part in the operation, and the search continues for the remaining people. The incident underscores ongoing maritime safety challenges and the risks of smuggling routes in the region.
