Coast Guard seizes over a ton of suspected marijuana after go-fast chase

A routine Coast Guard patrol led to the detection of a suspicious go-fast boat, prompting the cutter Escanaba to launch a small craft for inspection. The suspect vessel stopped peacefully, allowing crews to locate a series of 47 bales—totaling 2,082 pounds—along its previous route. The material, described as suspected marijuana, was assessed at a value exceeding $2.4 million.
Four people were detained in connection with the seizure. Joint Interagency Task Force South highlighted the mission’s vigilance, professionalism, and seamless coordination from detection through evidence recovery, and acknowledged assistance from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Haiti. The bust aligns with ongoing U.S. efforts to disrupt narcotics trafficking in the Western Hemisphere.
