Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Danone to revise EU plastic bottle recycling claims
Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Danone have agreed to alter recycling statements on their plastic bottles sold in the EU after three years of talks with the European Commission.
After three years of negotiations with the European Commission, Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Danone have consented to modify the recycling messages on their plastic beverage bottles marketed in the European Union. The new label will state that the bottle is 100% recycled, but will note that the cap and label are excluded. This adjustment stems from a probe launched after a November 2023 alert by the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), which found some environmental claims potentially misleading.
The companies have also agreed to simplify the recycling call-to-action from “Recycle me again” to simply “Recycle me.” While Coca-Cola and Nestlé have already begun applying parts of the agreement online, national consumer protection agencies will oversee full implementation and can sanction non-compliance. The Commission plans further discussions with the broader packaging industry to ensure uniform rules across the single market.
Why it matters
The label changes aim to prevent misleading eco-claims and ensure consumers receive accurate recycling information across the EU.
