Coco Gauff heads to the US Open after revamping her serve and forehand

Coco Gauff returns to Arthur Ashe Stadium for the US Open after a string of hard-court successes and a concerted effort to fix her serve and forehand. Over the past five months she has defeated Jessica Pegula twice, including a swift victory in the Cincinnati Open final, and improved her serve statistics dramatically, lowering double faults to an average of four per match and boosting first-serve points won to 75 %. The changes followed her recruitment of biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan, who began working with her shortly after the 2025 US Open.

Gauff’s revamped game also features a more aggressive forehand, though she still trails in break-point saves. Pegula, who has faced Gauff many times, noted the American’s improved movement and confidence on serve, suggesting she will be a tough opponent in New York. Gauff’s first-round opponent will be Turkey’s Zeynep Sönmez.
