Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Rejects Creating a Charitable Foundation, Cites Ideological Capture
Coinbase chief Brian Armstrong said he will not set up a permanent charitable foundation, arguing that many such entities become ideologically driven.
During a conversation on the Katie Miller Podcast, Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong voiced a contrarian stance on philanthropy, saying he will not create a lasting charitable foundation. He warned that many foundations eventually become influenced by ideological interests, pointing to the Ford Foundation as a case where the original founder’s vision might be compromised. Financial advisers had suggested a foundation after Coinbase went public, but Armstrong prefers a donor-advised fund that lets him direct money to causes he believes advance civilization.
He continues to donate personally and backs initiatives such as the annual Battle for Polytopia championship, which now offers a $10,000 prize pool. Armstrong also critiqued the philanthropic motives of peers like Bill Gates, suggesting image rehabilitation can drive such giving. While he remains open to future changes, his current approach emphasizes direct control over charitable impact.
