Colbert's former writing team teams up with Mariska Hargitay for Emmy gig

The writers who crafted Stephen Colbert’s Late Show are now collaborating with Mariska Hargitay as she prepares to host the Emmy Awards.

In a recent interview, Mariska Hargitay revealed that the former Stephen Colbert Late Show writers have joined her brainstorming sessions for the Emmy Awards ceremony, which she will host for the first time. The Late Show concluded in May following a contentious exchange with Donald Trump, after which its writers posted a self-made "For Your Consideration" video on Instagram due to one outlet’s lack of a campaign. Hargitay, who has earned ten Emmy nominations and one win for her role on Law & Order: SVU, explained that humor has long been a coping tool on the demanding crime-drama set, making the collaboration feel intuitive.

She also teased a comedic idea involving famous guests requesting to play a dead body on the show, a notion that has circulated among the writers. The Late Show remains nominated for nine Emmys this year, spanning categories from variety series to technical design. Hargitay’s comments underscore the blending of comedy and drama talent ahead of the September 14 ceremony.

Why it matters

The partnership shows how TV talent repurposes after a show's cancellation, influencing Emmy hosting dynamics.
