Coles drops Coffs Coast banana supply, prompting farmer backlash

Coles disclosed that it is ending its agreement to buy locally grown bananas, cucumbers and pumpkins for stores along the Coffs Coast, describing the shift as part of a broader effort to streamline its supply chain. The decision means that bananas on Coffs Harbour shelves will largely come from North Queensland, increasing transport distance from six kilometres to roughly 1,600 kilometres, according to Mick Gentle of the local growers' association.

Farmers warn the move could jeopardise the sustainability of the regional industry and impact as many as 40 families, with concerns that the iconic banana identity of the area may fade. Some of the displaced produce may find a new outlet with Woolworths, but growers stress that losing access to half of the national fresh-produce market is a significant blow. Golden Dawn, the wholesaler that previously facilitated deliveries, declined to comment, while growers like Dominic Canale remain hopeful but uncertain about the long-term effects.
