Collingwood AFLW coach Sam Wright resigns amid one-win season
Sam Wright announced his departure as Collingwood's AFLW senior coach with the team holding only one victory as the final round approaches.
Sam Wright confirmed he will leave his role as Collingwood's AFLW senior coach, ending a three-season tenure as the team heads into the final round with a solitary win. In his statement, Wright emphasized that the decision was best for his family and the football program, while expressing gratitude to players, staff and supporters. The club is under pressure after captain Ruby Schleicher announced she will not re-sign and will return to Western Australia, prompting concerns over a potential exodus of out-of-contract talent such as Tarni White, Sarah Rowe, Mattea Breed, Lauren Butler and Bri Davey.
Collingwood CEO Craig Kelly praised Wright's care and also acknowledged the support of his partner Georgia. Wright's final game will be at Windy Hill against Essendon, which also enters the match with only one win and is bidding farewell to coach Natalie Wood. Meanwhile, St Kilda sits above both clubs on the ladder and is also searching for a new senior coach after parting ways with Nick Dal Santo.
Why it matters
The coaching change highlights Collingwood's struggle and could trigger a major reshuffle of its AFLW roster.
