Cologne immigration officer arrested for running sham-marriage scheme
Police have taken Subha L, a staff member of the Cologne Immigration Office, into custody on suspicion of operating a marriage-fraud network that helped Indian nationals obtain German residency.
German police arrested Subha L, an employee of the Cologne Immigration Office, along with three co-suspects - her husband Pawan L and the men Anil K and Kuljeet S - for allegedly managing a large-scale sham-marriage operation. The network paired Indian men with Bulgarian women, often marrying them on Cyprus, and then used the EU free-movement provisions and falsified employment contracts to move to Germany, citing Subha L’s flat in Köln-Höhenberg as their residence and charging a monthly fee of 200 euros.
As a civil servant, Subha L is said to have prepared and approved the necessary residence-permit documents for the men. The accused are now in investigative custody. The case revives concerns about the Cologne Immigration Office, which earlier this year faced criticism for halting the deportation of hundreds of migrants, some of whom received social benefits and committed crimes. A similar scandal in 2022 involved former employee Elke H, who forged documents for a Syrian smuggling ring and received a prison sentence.
