Colombian President signs decree to ban street blockades ahead of nationwide protests

President Abelardo de la Espriella issued a security order that forbids barricades and road closures as large protests are set for Wednesday.

In a video address, President Abelardo de la Espriella announced a new security decree that authorises officials to remove street barricades, prohibit road closures and prevent attacks on security forces during upcoming protests. He emphasized that while the right to protest is upheld, actions that block roads, endanger emergency services or incite chaos are not permitted. The order is aimed at giving the government "the teeth it needs" to protect citizens and combat what he described as urban terrorism disguised as protest.

The decree comes as major labour unions, including the teachers' federation Fecode and the Central Union of Workers, along with left-wing organisations, have scheduled rallies across Bogota, Medellin, Cali and Barranquilla. Former President Gustavo Petro said he will march from Parque Nacional to Plaza de Bolívar, demanding improvements in education, healthcare, labour rights and cost of living. Authorities will set up unified command posts to coordinate police, military and municipal leaders, ensuring that disruptive acts are documented and that cargo transport and emergency vehicles are not impeded.

Why it matters

The decree could shape how large-scale protests unfold and affect public order across Colombia.
