Colorado launches culturally tailored dementia navigation for Latino families
Colorado's GUIDE program now includes bilingual dementia care navigators to better serve the state's growing Latino population affected by Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s disease disproportionately impacts Latino Americans, who are 1.5 times more likely to develop the condition than white Americans. In Colorado, roughly a quarter of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, and about 11,000 of the 91,000 seniors with Alzheimer’s are Latino. To address cultural and language barriers, the state’s Medicare-backed GUIDE program assigns dementia care navigators to eligible patients and their caregivers.
The program, now active in Grand Junction, Durango, Pueblo and Denver, offers personalized care plans, medication reviews and respite options. Feedback from a group of Latino caregivers prompted the hiring of bilingual navigators and the creation of Spanish-language educational materials. Since its launch, the University of Colorado team has enrolled 200 patients and is monitoring caregiver strain and care quality.
