Comcast Activates Free Wi-Fi Motion Sensing on Millions of Xfinity Routers
Comcast is rolling out a free Wi-Fi-based motion-detection feature to compatible Xfinity routers through an app update.
Comcast has begun enabling Wi-Fi motion sensing on millions of Xfinity routers as part of its Xfinity Shield service, converting the devices into basic activity monitors without extra hardware. The capability, delivered through a free update to the Xfinity Internet app on August 18, detects disturbances in the Wi-Fi link between the gateway and connected devices and can send users notifications. Users can toggle the feature on or off and choose from Home Watch, Away Watch or Dark Watch modes, but it requires an advanced XB7 or newer gateway.
Senior Vice President of consumer products Kohposh Kuda said the company spent three years refining the algorithms to reach a reliable level for home security. While Comcast does not claim the technology will replace traditional cameras, it offers a low-cost alternative alongside its paid Shield Select package, which includes cameras and 24/7 response. The rollout follows earlier attempts by companies like Linksys, Wiz and Philips Hue, and signals Comcast’s broader interest in expanding Wi-Fi-based sensing for future applications.
Why it matters
It gives households a no-cost way to add motion-detecting security using existing routers.
