Commanders' overtime misplay leads to a 27-27 tie with Giants
Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels ran instead of spiking in overtime, causing a clock error that left the game tied 27-27 with the New York Giants.
Facing the New York Giants in overtime, the Washington Commanders were within 26 yards of a game-winning field goal. Coach Dan Quinn instructed quarterback Jayden Daniels to either spike the ball or throw it out of bounds with 13 seconds remaining, but Daniels instead attempted a run, returning to the line of scrimmage with only eight seconds left and no timeout. The clock continued to run, and officials could not spot the ball before time expired, leaving the contest at a 27-27 stalemate.
Both coaches expressed disappointment, with Quinn saying the error also rested on his play-calling and Daniels admitting personal responsibility. Giants coach John Harbaugh called the sequence a “comedy of errors.” Minority owner Magic Johnson posted on X that he was in total disbelief over the poor clock management.
Why it matters
The botched clock decision cost Washington a win and highlights the importance of situational awareness in NFL overtime.
