Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reports $250 million earnings in 2025
Howard Lutnick, the Commerce secretary, disclosed earnings exceeding $250 million for 2025, largely from a large distribution and asset sales.
An ethics filing for 2025 reveals that Commerce secretary Howard Lutnick earned over $250 million, with the bulk coming from a $190 million distribution by Cantor Fitzgerald before he moved his ownership to his two oldest sons. Between May and October of the previous year, Lutnick sold assets valued at a minimum of $259 million and bought stock-index and money-market funds worth at least $166 million. His reported assets as of December 2025 total at least $237 million, a sharp decline from an earlier filing that listed a minimum of $805 million, though the filing allows a wide range of asset valuations.
Lutnick continues to lead about 40 entities, primarily LLCs named for trusts or individual properties. The Department of Commerce has not yet commented, and the filing has not been posted to the Office of Government Ethics website as required. The disclosure comes amid broader scrutiny of wealth concentration in the Trump administration, where one outlet estimates cabinet members collectively hold over $7.5 billion.
Why it matters
The filing highlights the massive personal wealth of a senior cabinet official and raises questions about transparency and conflict-of-interest safeguards.
