Commonwealth Bank vows to keep regional branches and cash services open through 2030
Commonwealth Bank announced it will extend its regional branch moratorium until December 2030 and maintain cash availability despite declining usage.
Commonwealth Bank confirmed it will keep its hundreds of regional branches open at least until December 2030, extending a moratorium that was set to end in July next year. The move mirrors Westpac’s earlier decision to delay rural branch closures to 2030. With a network of more than 600 branches and 1,700 ATMs, the bank also pledged to sustain cash access despite a drop in cash transactions from 97% of Australians in 2007 to 50% in 2025.
CEO Matt Comyn said the total cash transaction volume remains larger than many assume and that no timeline exists for ending cash support. The bank will invest $140 million to upgrade branch services and continues its partnership with Australia Post through 2032 to broaden service locations.
Why it matters
It ensures continued banking access for regional Australians as digital adoption rises.
