Marking a quarter-century since the September 11 attacks, New York City continues to face a wide array of terror threats, retaining its status as the globe’s most targeted metropolis. The NYPD says it has stopped around 20 confirmed plots and many additional schemes that have not been made public. Protecting the city relies on collaboration among local police, federal homeland security agencies, and nonprofit entities such as the Community Security Initiative (CSI).
Established in 2019, CSI operates as a community-based counterterrorism network aimed at defending New York’s Jewish population and the thousands of Jewish institutions across the city. In an interview, CSI director Mitchell Silber highlighted a shift in public discourse, noting that online platforms and some politicians now portray Jewish victims as acceptable targets. He stressed that this rhetoric fuels the danger of future mass attacks. The conversation underscores the ongoing need for coordinated security efforts to keep New Yorkers safe.
