Company director charged with taking a bribe to secure a multi-million-ringgit loan

Chan Kim Kooi, a director of a private trust management firm, is accused of receiving a RM209,600 bribe from Goh Hwan Hua to help obtain a RM20.6 million loan.

Chan Kim Kooi, 38, faces charges of accepting a RM209,600 inducement from Goh Hwan Hua, a director of I-Serve Travel & Tours, to facilitate a RM20.6 million loan from a private trust management company where Chan also serves as a director. The prosecution says the money was transferred to an account belonging to a firm associated with Chan, with the alleged bribery taking place at a Subang Jaya bank on 26 February 2021.

Goh, who co-founded the low-cost carrier MYAirline, is also implicated. Under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act, Chan could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of at least five times the alleged sum. Judge Nasir Nordin granted Chan bail of RM40,000 with one surety and ordered monthly reporting to the MACC. The next case management hearing is set for 13 November, with Deputy Public Prosecutor Muaz Ahmad Khairuddin representing the prosecution and lawyer Naresh Mayachandran defending Chan.
