Competing toll-cap promises put Victorian drivers in the spotlight
Victoria's major parties have each pledged a toll-cap scheme that could rebate up to $30 a week for eligible vehicles, aiming to win voter support ahead of the election.
In the run-up to Victoria's November election, Labor unveiled a $191 million initiative to cap road-toll costs at $30 per one outlet starting in 2027, with potential rebates of $350 weekly for eligible cars, motorbikes and light commercial vehicles. The opposition coalition countered with a $180 million pledge to cap tolls at $50 per one outlet for two years, also eliminating the $16 administrative charge for drivers without an e-Tag.
Both proposals maintain normal toll payments but allow motorists to claim quarterly refunds via Service Victoria, and each includes a review of tolling arrangements. Roads Minister Paul Hamer acknowledged the measure is not a long-term solution but necessary in the short term. Polling by Resolve Political Monitor shows Labor’s primary vote flat at 25 percent, the coalition at 28 percent, and One Nation at 23 percent, with the latter yet to detail a specific toll policy.
