Concrete quality in Tung Chung public housing blocks flagged for further testing

Routine concrete cube strength tests performed between late August and early September uncovered possible deficiencies in structural concrete for Blocks 3, 4 and 5 of the Tung Chung Area 42 public housing project. The Housing Authority’s engineering team reported the finding, and the Housing Department’s on-site team verified that the overall structure is currently safe. Contractors were immediately instructed to collect additional concrete core samples for compressive strength testing and to provide a comprehensive report with remediation proposals.

The contractor has also replaced the concrete supplier involved. In response, the Housing Department has tasked other engineering teams with broader inspections and spot testing of comparable works, though no similar issues have been detected elsewhere. The Authority aims to finish the project by the original contract deadline while meeting all safety and legislative requirements.
