Condo owners gain new legal right to access all unit documents
Owners of housing cooperatives can now demand any paperwork related to their apartments from the management company.
Shareholders in housing cooperatives have been granted a new legal entitlement to obtain all documents pertaining to their own apartments. Before the change, management bodies could decline requests, including for moisture inspection reports, claiming the documents belonged solely to the cooperative. Tarik Ahsanullah, a community relations manager and lawyer, called the prior practice illogical and welcomed the correction.
Under the new rule, owners can now ask for and demand any paperwork that relates directly to their unit. The amendment was discussed in a televised program where Ahsanullah and Mia Koro-Kanerva of the Real Estate Federation also outlined additional housing law reforms set to take effect soon.
