Confagri seeks urgent talks with President and Prime Minister over rising farm input costs
The Portuguese agricultural federation Confagri has asked President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro for urgent meetings to address soaring fuel and fertilizer prices that threaten food production.
The Confederation of Agricultural Cooperatives and Credit (Confagri) announced that its governing council has resolved to seek urgent meetings with President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro to present the critical situation facing Portugal’s agriculture sector. Confagri highlighted that rising prices for fuels and fertilizers are putting intense pressure on farms, cooperatives and the entire chain that delivers food to Portuguese tables.
The federation warned that the lack of timely measures could endanger the sustainability of numerous agricultural enterprises and the country’s capacity to produce essential food items. Secretary-General Nuno Serra described the issue as one of food security, national competitiveness and regional cohesion, urging the state to act before impacts become irreversible. The Ministry of Agriculture and Sea previously indicated a forthcoming support package to offset the burden on producers caused by higher energy and fertilizer costs.
