Congaree National Park's Floodplain Forests Showcase Ancient River Channels and Champion Trees

Congaree National Park in South Carolina contains about 80% of its area within the Congaree River floodplain, preserving one of the nation’s largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forests. Satellite imagery reveals historic river paths, oxbow lakes and thriving champion trees that benefit from regular flooding.

Congaree National Park’s terrain is largely defined by the Congaree River floodplain, accounting for roughly 80% of the park’s 63-acre expanse and safeguarding a rare stretch of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest. Landsat 9’s Operational Land Imager captured the river’s winding path, highlighting paleochannels, ridges and swales that create distinct ecological zones visible as varying shades of green. The river’s meanders cause faster flow on outer banks, carving erosion, while slower inner flows deposit sediments that build point bars, eventually forming U-shaped oxbow lakes like Weston Lake, noted for its depth, and the extensive Bates Old River, one of South Carolina’s longest abandoned channels.

Over time, these features may fill with sediment, becoming shallow wetlands or sloughs that host flood-tolerant cypress-tupelo forests. Historical logging in the 1880s was limited by frequent floods and difficult access, allowing much of the floodplain to survive, a fact recognized by conservationists in the 1950s and leading to national monument status in 1976 and park designation in 2003. Regular winter, spring, and storm-driven floods spread nutrient-rich silt, fostering the growth of giant champion trees such as possumhaw, water hickory, loblolly pine, laurel oak, swamp tupelo and sweetgum, many of which have held state or national size records. The park’s unique ecosystems are celebrated during National Park Week through NASA Earth Observatory’s satellite image collection and the Earth to Sky program linking NASA science with park rangers.
