Congress honors veteran Liberal Party lawmaker Raul Daza, 91

Lawmakers gathered at the Batasang Pambansa to mourn the death of former Northern Samar governor and longtime Liberal Party representative Raul Daza, who died at 91.

At a necrological service in the Batasang Pambansa, members of Congress paid tribute to Raul Daza, a former governor of Northern Samar and a veteran Liberal Party legislator who died on October 12 at the age of 91. Daza served in the 8th, 9th, 10th, 15th, 16th and 17th Congresses, opposing President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s Martial Law and later joining the Presidential Commission on Good Government under President Corazon Aquino.

He authored key laws such as Republic Act 6639, which renamed Manila International Airport, the Government Service Insurance System Act of 1997, and the regulation of the merchant marine profession. Fellow lawmakers noted his principled stance, recalling that he declined to wield the Speaker's gavel to impede the 2012 Reproductive Health Law despite personal objections. Former House Deputy Minority Leader Leila de Lima recalled Daza's personal support during her detention, emphasizing his empathy born from his own experience of persecution. Senators and representatives also praised his lifelong dedication to democracy and public service.
