Congress poised to act on comprehensive veterans care legislation

With the House back from recess and the Senate set to reconvene, Congress can move forward on the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act, a comprehensive package targeting the needs of over 32 million veterans, service members, caregivers and families. The proposal consolidates more than 62 provisions, many of which address long-standing VA priorities such as reducing wait times for mental-health and specialist appointments, expanding suicide-prevention programs, and improving care for mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury.

It also includes the Major Richard Star Act, which would stop the reduction of retirement pay for combat-injured veterans who retire early, and the Veteran Caregiver 3R Act to bolster financial stability for caregivers. Backed by 92 % of veterans in a Mission one outlet's survey and supported by numerous veteran groups, the bill aims to make VA and community care more accessible and accountable. Critics note budgetary and claims-evaluation concerns, but proponents argue the legislation is a rare chance to address multiple veteran-identified gaps at once.
