Congressional panel urges suspension of APA's accreditation authority over antisemitism concerns

A bipartisan advisory committee to the Department of Education voted to recommend suspending the American Psychological Association's accrediting arm after allegations of persistent antisemitism.

The committee, composed of members from both parties, approved the recommendation by a 7-4 margin. It targets the APA's Commission on Accreditation, which oversees more than 1,300 graduate and post-doctoral psychology programs. Critics, including Rep. Ritchie Torres, say the body has failed to address a longstanding pattern of antisemitic behavior. The move could strip the APA-CoA of its federal recognition, affecting standards for psychology training nationwide.

Why it matters

Suspending the APA's accrediting authority could reshape standards for psychology education across the United States.
