Connaught Place closed for CJP protest, traders warn of Rs 2,000 crore losses

Authorities have shut Connaught Place to prevent a planned CJP protest, and traders say the closure could cost the market around Rs 2,000 crore.

In response to a planned protest by the Cockroach Janata Party, the New Delhi Tourism Authority ordered the closure of Connaught Place, a major commercial hub, to protect lives and property during the busy weekend period. Amit Gupta, Joint Secretary of the NDTA, explained the decision was taken because thousands of visitors typically gather there. The traders' association warned that the shutdown could inflict losses of roughly Rs 2,000 crore on local businesses.

Brijesh Goyal, chair of the Chamber of Trade and Industry, highlighted the severe economic disruption the protest could cause. Delhi Police have denied permission for the rally, and the NDTA has asked officials to relocate such events to larger, less congested areas. The move aims to limit disruption to both commerce and residents in the capital.

Why it matters

The closure threatens massive financial losses for Delhi's key shopping district and highlights tensions over protest locations.
