Conservation team guides newborn green turtles toward the sea on Mataking Island

Staff at Mataking Island collect green turtle hatchlings, place them in containers and release them on the beach, where the tiny turtles crawl into the ocean.

On Mataking Island off Sabah, Malaysia, conservation workers retrieve green turtle eggs, incubate them and then move the hatchlings into boxes for a beach release. The young turtles make their way toward the water under staff supervision. Since opening in 2006, the hatchery has handled roughly 36,000 eggs and collaborates with WWF-Malaysia and the Sabah Wildlife Department to protect nests and boost survival rates. Adult turtles are also observed feeding around the island's coral reefs.
