Conservative MP James Cleverly resigns from shadow cabinet to seek London mayoralty

Sir James Cleverly confirmed he is leaving his post as shadow housing secretary to run for the Conservative candidacy for London mayor. In a statement to the Times, he said the capital needs leadership beyond mere administration and that he must be free to discuss all aspects of its future. He informed party leader Kemi Badenoch of his resignation, emphasizing his focus on winning the race.

The mayoral contest will not occur until 2028, with Labour incumbent Sir Sadiq Khan yet to decide on a historic fourth term. Cleverly, who previously served as foreign secretary under former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, pledged to rebuild London’s reputation and position it as a top global city for living, working, investing and business growth.
