Conservative MP urges Liberals to ban reduced sentences for immigrant offenders

Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel Garner reiterated her demand that the Liberal government change the Criminal Code to eliminate “candy sentences” that let immigrants evade deportation. Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, she highlighted a series of headlines showing non-citizens receiving reduced penalties, calling the trend “insane and disgusting.” She referenced a Montreal ruling where a Ghanaian man accused of violent theft was granted a conditional discharge because of his immigration status.

Rempel Garner urged that immigration status no longer be considered during sentencing and called for the resignations of Immigration Minister Lena Diab and Justice Minister Sean Fraser. While noting that recent Liberal bills tightened bail and sentencing for violent crimes, she noted they did not address immigration-related sentencing. She also voiced confidence that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre could defeat Prime Minister Mark Carney in a federal election.
