Conservatives push for inquiry into European Left Alliance over French protests
ECR vice-chair Charlie Weimers has launched a signature drive in the European Parliament to trigger a formal investigation of the European Left alliance, citing recent French unrest.
Charlie Weimers, vice-chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists group, started a petition in the European Parliament to demand an official inquiry into the European Left alliance’s activities. He links the request to recent incidents in France, where the office of Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu accused La France Insoumise of orchestrating student mobilisations that escalated into clashes. The ECR group argues that such actions may violate the European Union’s fundamental values and should be examined by the EU authority for political parties.
To bring the proposal to a vote, Weimers must secure at least 180 signatures from MEPs representing three different political groups, a threshold that could be met with support from right-wing and far-right members. The European Left alliance, which includes parties such as Spain’s Podemos and Italy’s Left, rejected the allegations, defending their support for peaceful student demands.
Why it matters
The move could lead to the European Left alliance losing EU funding or registration if found to breach EU values.
