Conservatives unveil parody tapestry mocking Labour's first two years in power

A spoof version of the Bayeux Tapestry, satirising Labour leader Keir Starmer and deputy Angela Rayner, will be displayed at the upcoming Conservative Party conference.

Ahead of next week’s Conservative Party conference, organisers will showcase an 88-foot parody of the Bayeux Tapestry that ridicules Labour’s early tenure. Panels caricature the Peter Mandelson controversy, including his alleged ties to Jeffrey Epstein, and depict Keir Starmer and former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney bidding farewell to Mandelson. Another scene mocks Angela Rayner’s resignation after a HMRC investigation into unpaid stamp duty on her Brighton flat, showing her vaping in an inflatable.

The tapestry also attacks Labour’s defence-budget commitments, with Kemi Badenoch portrayed manning a tank aimed at Andy Burnham and John Healey. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said she enjoys the historical satire and does not want the party to appear overly serious. The original Bayeux Tapestry, created in Kent and now displayed at the British Museum, measures 224 feet.

Why it matters

The parody highlights how political parties use cultural symbols to criticize opponents ahead of a major conference.
