Constitutional Court President Responds to Senate Inquiry over Secret Meeting with Former Prime Minister
Simina Tănăsescu, president of Romania's Constitutional Court, sent a written reply to the Senate committee probing her August 14 meeting with ex-prime minister Ilie Bolojan, denying any discussion of pending cases.
On Tuesday, Simina Tănăsescu, the head of Romania’s Constitutional Court, delivered a formal response to the Senate’s investigative commission regarding her private meeting with former premier Ilie Bolojan on 14 August. The encounter, which took place in the office of Mircea Abrudean, was defended as a discussion about obtaining new premises for the Court’s expanding personnel, rather than a forum for case deliberation.
Tănăsescu highlighted that the Court’s docket has grown substantially, leading to the recruitment of 20 magistrate-assistant roles that started work on 1 August 2025, many of whom initially operated in the public meeting hall due to a lack of dedicated space. She added that, since assuming her mandate, she has held informal negotiations with the leadership of both chambers and the Legislative Council to secure suitable facilities. The Senate committee, now in its sixth session, has yet to produce a conclusion and plans to meet again on 3 November.
