Constitutional Court to elect new president in early November

The Hungarian Constitutional Court announced a call for applications to fill its presidency, with the election slated for early November.

The Constitutional Court issued a notice inviting applications for its presidency, open to every current judge. Candidates must submit their documents by the Monday deadline at 16:00, after which an eight-day review period will commence. A secret vote by the full bench will decide the winner, needing the affirmative votes of over half the members.

The elected president will serve a three-year term as defined by the Basic Law. Former president Polt Péter has stepped down, and deputy chairwoman Czine Ágnes is acting as president until a successor is chosen. The parliament recently approved a law detailing the election procedure, and the Tisza Party nominated five new judges, while the Fidesz faction abstained from the vote.

Why it matters

The appointment will shape Hungary's highest constitutional authority for the next three years.
