Construction kicks off on ₹25,000 crore coal-gasification plant in Odisha
Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd has begun ground work on its ₹25,000 crore coal-gasification project in Odisha, with most contracts already awarded.
Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd, a partnership of Coal India Ltd and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, has commenced on-site construction for its ₹25,000 crore coal-gasification facility in Odisha. Managing Director Peeyush Kumar said most tenders are in place, with contracts totaling roughly ₹15,000 crore already awarded—about ₹10,000 crore to BHEL and ₹5,000 crore to Larsen & Toubro. The project is divided into four major packages, covering gasification, syngas purification, ammonia synthesis and ammonium nitrate production.
Using domestically developed pressurised fluidised-bed gasification, the plant aims to output 0.66 million tonnes of technical-grade ammonium nitrate annually. It aligns with the National Coal Gasification Mission’s goal of achieving 100 million tonnes of capacity by 2030 to curb reliance on imported chemicals such as LNG, urea, ammonia and methanol. The venture has secured single-window clearance from the Odisha state government.
Why it matters
The project advances India's push for domestic chemical production and reduces dependence on costly imports.
