Consumer expert flags insurance renewal loopholes after woman saves £589

Martin Lewis warned that car and home-insurance renewal rules contain loopholes, citing a Liverpool resident who cut her premium by £589.

Martin Lewis highlighted gaps in the 2022 FCA regulations that were meant to stop insurers from overcharging renewing policyholders. The law applies only when the same sales channel—such as a particular comparison website—is used, allowing insurers to offer lower rates through alternative routes. Lewis illustrated the point with Kath, a driver from Liverpool, who followed his suggestion to shop for new quotes 23 days before her renewal and reduced her car-insurance cost from £1,226 to £637, saving £589.

He described this period as the "sweet spot" because early quotes tend to reflect lower risk profiles. The FCA’s original intent was to protect loyal customers, but Lewis says consumers must still actively compare offers. The Financial Ombudsman Service notes that many complaints stem from renewal price hikes, underscoring the relevance of Lewis’s advice.

Why it matters

Consumers can avoid paying excess premiums by checking alternative insurance quotes before renewal.
