Consumer watchdog finds widespread flaws in Hungarian laundry detergents
Hungary's National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority identified numerous issues in liquid and powder laundry detergents, including misleading dosage instructions and poor packaging.
In a recent comparative analysis, the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority examined both liquid and powder laundry detergents for ingredient content, label correctness, and packaging standards. The investigation revealed that nearly half of the items had shortcomings, ranging from dosage guidelines that did not match mass- or volume-based recommendations to packaging that spilled powder before being opened.
Laboratory tests showed that many powders contained minimal active cleaning substances, and a few products did not contain any of the advertised oxygen bleach. Additionally, some detergents displayed unusually high salt levels, raising questions about their cleaning efficacy. Because a product advertised high efficiency despite low active content, the authority has initiated a formal procedure against it. The NKFH advises consumers to consider fabric type and soil level when choosing detergents and warns that higher price does not guarantee better quality.
Why it matters
Consumers may be paying for ineffective laundry products due to misleading labeling and poor quality control.
